I've seen the boeing plant in charleston,SC a few months ago and it looked almost complete

I hate to say this, but I'll believe it when I see it. I'm sure they can do it, but I've had enough with estimates and promises made in advance. SHOW ME THE MONEY!!! ;)

I agree with zcolescott. Sure they could do it, but in the end I'd be willing to bet instead of delivering 3-4 planes a month late and over budget now they'd be delivering 10. The demand is probably more of Boeing wanting to make up for lost time and not wanting Airbus to court away potential buyers with their A350.

as a former employee that was connected to the higher-ups who made the decision on the partner/supply chain mfg method - 'I told you so!' It is Industrial Engineering/LEAN 101, have your supply chain as close as possible to your production facility(ies) + Engineering 101, build as much redundancy/factor(s) of safety into your production system. Boeing did neither nor did 'they' reach critical management agreements with their 'Partners'.

So here we are, the same as 2001 - no flying 7E7, er uh 787; and "our" reputation as damaged as it ever has been. Was it a good decision after all to buy McDD? They got rid of all of us heritage Boeing managers (and wouldn't listen to us anyways - see 7E7/787) and now the company is a shell of it's former self complete with a scandal or two.

Again the PR types hired by Boeing are hard at work making management tell tall tales nobody believes including yours truly. We will continue to be highly skeptical until the 787 is flying commercial routes with Zero bugs (defects) consistently day after day for the first two years at least.
