I think having major malfunctions over the open ocean has to be the worst gut punch in aviation.
Who knew there was a small AFB in the middle of the Atlantic.
It's the Azores! A popular tourist destination!
Terceira. Been there, it's a sweet little island with nice people and (surprise) great seafood.
I was TDY there and on one day the winds reached 100 mph. And it wasn't a storm. Just a regular windy day for the season. Plus, stay there for more than a week and that island gets mighty small.
I am somewhat familiar with the Azores, just did not realize this island was part of them.
