not good - the stopped "Fan" would act as a wall or solid object and create great Drag, totally different than a stopped propeller which is Feathered.

Great interview. The takeaway: the 777 won’t fly on a single engine after all, at least not after engine cowling loss causes disrupted airflow.

Loss of cowling wasn't the root cause. Cowling damage was secondary to the primary event, where one hollow titanium fan blade, about 33 inches long and weighing about 33 pounds, broke off. With extreme secondary effects.

On UA1175, DRAG from the windmilling failed engine caused a huge challenge to controlability.

In a hypothetical future event, with same blade loss but the cowling stays ON, EXTREME drag (and extreme vibration) would still occur.

??? Loss of cowling caused by fan failure.
