Rolls-Royce’s All Electric Aircraft Claims World Speed Record
Rolls-Royce today shared that its all-electric plane has set three new world records. One of these achievements is that on November 16th, the Spirit of Innovation aircraft reached a top speed of 555.9 km/h (345.4 mph) over 3 km, surpassing the current record by 213.04 km/h (132 mph) to affirm itself as the world’s fastest all-electric vehicle. When it comes to electric planes, the problem is not speed, but about endurance. RR was smart in picking an aerobatic plane as their electric showcase: it's showy/cool and has the lowest needs when it comes to useful load and endurance. A cool marketing gimmick.
Reminiscent of the Schneider Trophy days.
What, and when, was the first piston powered aircraft to reach that speed?
Aircraft reminds me of the Messerschmitt_209 - lots of engine with minimum airframe. Wonder if it is as scary to fly?
I suppose it has research and PR value.
