United 954 Diverted

It was already under Chicago ATC, why go back to Denver?
Going on to Chicago meant more availeable maintenance and aircraft probably.

If you look at the route, he turned over Idaho about 1.5 hours into the flight, I happened to be tracking it at the time.

Maybe management, or engineering, determined where they should go and land.
As you know engineering are monitoring (or capable of) the various parameters in-flight.
