The B-57A was introduced by the USAF in 1954. Designed and produced originally by British English Electric, a license for the light bomber was sold to Glenn L. Martin in 1953. Dozens of variants were built, with the RB-57 seeing extensive use in Vietnam. The one shown is one of the last two left in active service.

A B-57 unit of the Australian Air Force served with our forces in Vietnam. They had only one lose during the war and I was the Tactical Air Controller on duty the day of the loss. They flew an air support mission near the DMZ and a North Vietnamese SAM missile hit the aircraft. That was in 1971 just before the Aussie unit was pulled out of Vietnam. If memory serves me right, even though hit by a missile, the aircraft did manage to land safely. The Aussies were good allies in Vietnam. They did have ground forces fighting with us over there.

Most (if not all) of the high altitude photos taken of shuttle lift-offs were taken by the NASA WB57 A/C.
I smiled every time I saw someone comment about "that photo was taken from the International Space Station".
