McDonnell Douglas FA-18 Hornet (16-5220)
The first of four VMFA 323 "Death Rattlers" F/A-18C Hornets (165220), call sign "Snake One One," has both candles lit as it comes blazing along KRNO's 16L to launch away at the start of a trip home to MCAS Miramar.

It was toward late afternoon and the sun was to my left so as this one went past me I tried for a silhouette shot. It was a lot more difficult than I had anticipated. Snake One One had just rotated off and was a few feet in the air as it came blistering past my position on the perimeter road next to Charlie. The focal AND f-stop settings both needed to be adjusted simultaneously AND super quickly even as I was panning with it. I had even preplanned the adjustments. But I had forgotten that when I spun to my left to catch it with the sun directly behind it, I would also be snapping right into the a/burners. So my silhouette attempt did not come out as well as I had hoped .... so I am pleased that this click came out fine.
10/10 Gary! Super snap, great timing!
Well, this shot sure did turn out nice! Thanks, Gary!
Frick! I would k*ll to get a shot this good! More KRNO Calendar 2019 shots! 5*
Nice!!!
A little disappointed the Corps hasn't been converted to the E/F birds.
I worked with VMFA-323 (and 314, VFA-131, 132) aboard the Coral Sea back in the mid-80s as a contractor, when the 2 USMC squadrons were still at El Toro. It's still weird to read "MCAS Miramar" since my dad was stationed there back in the late 60s when it was "NAS Miramar"
