Boeing MD-11 (N1751A) - KSJC - Early 1990s shows American Airlines MD-11 N1751A *48420/451* at the hold bars at 30L for Tokyo-Narita for the apprx 1:00pm PST flight. Many times the NRT flight would sit here on the pad with engines turning for 30 minutes- only to go back to the gate and leave later. I never knew why - this all pre Internet days. photo from the old San Jose State Aviation School parking lot - I had an 8ft ladder in the back of my pickup truck to clear the fence line and GA planes parked in the foreground. N1751A was sold to FedEx in 1996 and this jet was converted to a freighter and still flying as such.

I worked for Fedex in the 1990's. I was flying AA from Mexico City to Dallas when I was approached by the captain of my flight. He saw my Fedex bag tag and had a question for me about employment for his daughter, who was also a pilot. I remember the first thing he said to me was "Thank you for buying all those MD-11s". Not well liked by the AA cockpit crews apparently.

Got a friend who flew the FE converted DC-10 and subsequent MD-11.
He much disliked the aircraft and calls it "The Beast" claiming landing it is challenging, etc.
National Airlines was my first flight on a DC-10 in 1971 when I was 14, having paid for my own tickets by mowing lawns.
Thanks for bringing this old photo this forum!

Odd that you mentioned it. The little airport where I went to college, the flights to ORD would sometimes sit at the apron for a half hour, or longer, and occasionally would even be sitting at the end of the runway, probably waiting for clearance Clarence to take off and enter their airspace.

Also at that airport, I did happen to see a DC-9 make the turn at the end of the runway, and the outside wing almost hit the ground at the side of the runway. The pilot gunned it even before they had cleared the corner. Reckless, but who knows what was going on. I'm sure it was exciting to be in that plane. YEA HAH!!!

I loved those big planes. And the DC-10's too.
