In the latest US3/ME3 spat, Delta Air Lines released a 15-minute long documentary-style video regarding the unfairness of government subsidies to the Middle East's three largest airlines from their respective countries. Fort Lauderdale-based regional carrier Silver Airways has signed a letter of intent to purchase up to 50 ATR-42-600 turboprops to replace their aging Saab 340s. The airline plans to take delivery of the first 20 or so airframes towards the end of 2017 and they also have the option to convert later orders to the larger ATR-72-600. WestJet's ultra low cost subsidiary is "Swooping" into the U.S. with an announcement to begin service to seven destinations. The first route will be between Edmonton and Las Vegas starting October 11. The airline will also begin service to Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Phoenix/Mesa, and Tampa by the end of October. California Pacific Airlines, after two months of operations has shut down with employees furloughed with no return-to-work date in place. The company informed the FAA on January 16 that it has ceased operations. Initially, the airline suspended it's Carlsbad route network until further notice, but has now ended the Essential Air Service routes out of Denver to Pierre and Watertown in South Dakota as well. The Department of Transportation has approved the Alternate Essential Air Service application for Crescent City opening the way for Contour Airlines to begin offering service between CEC and Oakland. The DOT will enter into a grant agreement with Crescent City to provide over $3 million in financial assistance for the pending airline service. Following a delay due to issues with lease and environmental review applications with San Diego County, California Pacific Airlines is officially scheduled to begin service out of Carlsbad on November 1, 2018.
