When I was in Saudi Arabia one of the things that really surprised me was basically slums. I would have thought that a country with that kind of wealth, everyone would be doing well, the exact opposite was true. What they lack in much of the Middle East is an economy based on many differant types of businesses. One which creates jobs, and some level of prosperity for everyone. But they just don't have that, your either part of the ruling family, part of the oil and gas economy, or you work for the government. If your not part of one of those, your living hand to mouth, it's the reason why the area is such a breeding ground for nut jobs. Who's fault is it, it's their governments fault for not working to create a vibrant economy. Now when I went to the UAE, completely differant story, the government was investing heavily in creating as many differant types of businesses as possible, and it really shows. Do they have their poor areas, absolutely, but there tiny by comparison. The end resul

Impressive to look at, but very primitive by todays standards in many ways (refuel panel, electronics bay, cockpit).

I guess in the heat of the moment, with little altitude to work with, there is very little room for error.

I understand the starboard engine has a prop brake on it, they basically use the engine on the ground like an APU. Not aware of other differances between port and starboard engines.

Heard something about they may have lost one engine and partial loss of power in the other one. Anyone else hear anything like that? It might explain why they weren't able to control the aircraft if they had one good engine.

Here's a good safety database on the aircraft type,"http://aviation-safety.net/database/types/ATR-72/index".

Remenber, the news business is......a business. They sell the news to gain viewers. Their not in the business of reporting the facts, and, unfortunately, not only has it been like that for too long, it's not going to get any better.

I agree with Ray, one of the best looking aircraft I've ever seen.

Do they make the airlines run an evacuation test when they increase the number of seats in an aircraft? I forget what the test is officially called, but it's the one they do to confirm that they can completely evacuate the aircraft within a specific period of time for certification. If they do not, they should have to every time they make such a change. There's no way your getting out of smaller seats, packed together tighter, with more passangers, as quickly.
