Canadian Government Officially Orders Seizure Of Russian-Registered Antonov An-124 At Toronto Pearson Airport

Submitted
The Government of Canada has officially ordered the Antonov An-124 cargo plane seizure at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). The move comes as part of Canada's response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. The aircraft in question The Russian-registered aircraft Antonov An-124, nicknamed Ruslan, belongs to a subsidiary of Volga-Dnepr Airlines LLC and Volga-Dnepr Group. The 26.7-year-old aircraft, registered as RA-82078, has been stranded at YYZ Airport since… (www.msn.com) More...

That airplane has Ukraine for $1 written all over it (IF they want it)

The aircraft is a pawn in a much larger political pi**ing match. At that level alone, Ukraine will take it once airworthy.

I miss the 124s flying over my house when they take off from IAD they have a great sound.

I see them flying in and out of IAH. Great sound. But I’ll miss the AN225 that would occasionally fly in. That made a sound like no other.

used to work in a shop at the end of the main runway at YWG and the AN225 would stop every 6 weeks to take a load of combine headers overseas and it is an incredible sight to see and hear

I don't think it's particularly good news because it makes eventual peace and reconciliation with Russia in the future more difficult. But, in terms of the commercial ledger, the number of aircraft confiscated by Russia and the damage being done to them means that nothing the West does to the few Russian aircraft they've got will ever come close to equaling what Russia will owe the West.

Jana, here in the US we have a legal process called civil asset forfeiture. All a law enforcement activity has to do is suspect that the "asset" was involved in some way with a "crime". The "asset" is then seized by the LE and taken to court (not a joke). When you look at the court records and see USG vs. "asset", that is a simplistic way of how it works. I think Canada is just now figuring out how CAF works and using their laws for this. The US has been sizing cars, yachts, planes, and homes all over the world by using these laws. Several European countries have used them. Governments (the US included) don't like to use them on large assets because they have to maintain them until the asset is sold.

Regardless of which side of the war you're on, with Canada not being an actual belligerent in the war, this is theft of foreign property. Especially since they were bringing Covid supplies to Canada when it landed. Holding it until the conflict stops is acceptable but outright taking it and giving it to the opposing belligerent is just plain wrong. God help Canada if one of its international flights has to divert to any Russian airfield like the recent Air India jet bound for San Fran did. Russia might just decide the passengers need to be "seized" also. This would be a very bad precedent.

chiefaviator -3
The Canadians are as lawless as the Russians. Just another totalitarian regime.

That particular aircraft was contracted by the Canadian government to bring in Covid supplies. When Canada announced the sanctions, they told the operator because they were under contract they were exempt and make the flight to Toranto.

Upon landing they detained the aircraft and interned the crew.

Now they are seizing it.

The difference between military and civilian seems to be lost in Canada.

Does that mean Canadian citizens can be detained and assets seized around the world because of the government's politics?

Russian Foreign Ministry: Russia will respond to confiscation of An-124 100 percent. Wait for it…

The launch of the confiscation procedure, citing Canada’s domestic sanctions laws, of an An-124 aircraft of the Russian airline Volga-Dnepr illegally held at Toronto airport will not go without consequences, an answer will come when the opportunity presents itself, commented Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

Earlier, in early June, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Ukraine and at a meeting with Zelenskyy, he announced that he would hand over the detained An-124 to Kiev.

“Continuing the “tradition” of its predecessors, who gave asylum in Canada to Nazi accomplices among the hardcore Banderaites, the Trudeau regime, at the behest of the US, is setting up the Ukrainian authorities for a war with Russia until “the last Ukrainian”. This includes promises of military and financial aid, which is not as generous in reality, and promises to reward the zeal with stolen Russian property,” the Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokesman said in a commentary.

The An-124, which was on a humanitarian flight commissioned by the Canadian government to deliver anticoagulation drugs to Toronto, was essentially taken hostage with the far-reaching goal, as it now turns out, of robbing the aircraft and handing it over to the Kiev regime

“The Russian side warns that the practical implementation of this decision will have the most serious consequences for Russian-Canadian relations, already teetering on the brink of rupture through the fault of official Ottawa. Attempts to use local judicial processes to cover up this illegal and shameful action would not give it even the appearance of legitimacy. We reserve the right to retaliate, guided by the principle of reciprocity,” Maria Zakharova said.

On the air of Radio Sputnik, she explained that the plane detained in Toronto did not violate anyone’s airspace, was not carrying contraband, has no financial violations, and its arrest was linked to the start of the SAO.

She recalled that the same thing happened with Russian real estate in New York, Washington – on US soil – where the motivation was the Russian Federation’s pseudo-interference in elections in the United States. “There was nothing to do with the law here. They just took it away, imposed some restrictions on its use and did not even allow all these years to come and conduct an inventory of the condition of these facilities,” the diplomat said.

And Russia will not leave the theft of the An-124 unanswered, she added. “The answer will be – a hundred percent, so that no one doubts. That answer will come. How and when – when it is convenient, when the occasion is right, a decision will be made. You see, we respond to everything,” Maria Zakharova concluded.

There you go again..lashing out without researching. Let me explain.
Volga-Dnper was advised when the airspace would be closed to any and all Russian aircraft before they arrived. So they could have done 3 things.
A: Asked the Canadian government for a grant of pardon to allow the delivery and then be allowed to leave.
B: Divert to a closer airport and off load prior to the closure going into effect.
C: Advise the Canadian government that they would be unable to deliver the supplies due to the closure going into effect while there, and request instructions.

Non of that was done. So what is disgusting is the company knowing the info ahead of time, but failing to act on it. Or as we said here, Russia pushing the envelope to see if the government had the cahoonas to actually take the aircraft.
chiefaviator
chiefaviator 1
They actually did.

The Canadian government assured them that they would be exempt because they were under contract with the government.

The Canadians wanted those supplies without having to find other scarce operators and multiple aircraft at significantly increased costs. Of they could even find transportation in any near time frame.

Senate report outlines ‘grave’ Russian threat in 2016 election interference probe
The report details ties between the Trump campaign and Russia but doesn’t find evidence of coordinated scheme

Posted August 18, 2020 at 1:05pm
The Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday released the final report on its investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, finding numerous contacts between the Trump campaign and Moscow posed a "grave" counterintelligence threat.

"We found irrefutable evidence of Russian meddling," Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., acting chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in a statement, directly refuting President Donald Trump's repeated assertions that Russian interference was a "hoax" perpetrated by Democrats.

The committee, however, did not find any evidence of a coordinated scheme between the Trump campaign and Moscow, Rubio said.

The nearly 1,000-page report outlines the "breathtaking level of contacts between Trump officials and Russian government operatives that is a very real counterintelligence threat to our elections," Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., the committee’s top Democrat, said in a statement.

The bipartisan congressional report closes the panel's three-year probe into the Kremlin-led operation to influence and interfere in the 2016 presidential election. The fifth and final report involved interviewing 200 witnesses and examining more than 1 million documents, the committee said.

Previous volumes examined Russian attempts to break into U.S. election infrastructure, the Kremlin's use of social media to divide American public opinion, the Obama administration's failures to counter Moscow's push, and a review of the U.S. intelligence agencies' assessment.

A senate report with no evidence.
A two and half year special council concluding with "no collusion".
Irrefutable Evidence (Adam Schiff ad nauseam) but no proof ever produced.
All of this investigating just to find "no evidence" ... but we know it happened and we need you to believe it happened too.

Meanwhile, Obama repeatedly saying there was no way for elections to be rigged.

No, I'm expecting people who are interested in a topic like aviation, which requires attention to detail and an analytical mind, to apply those same skills to the news of the day, in a logical, unbiased manner.

I don't think you'd let a talking head behind a news desk do your thinking for you in the cockpit, and you'd be wise to not let them do you're thinking for you regarding world events because I can guarantee you, they're not providing you with facts. They're pushing a political agenda.

I can also guarantee that you don't know what the conflict between Ukraine and Russia is actually about or who the players behind it really are. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that this is just another American proxy war and saying so doesn't make me a Russian bot, Putin apologist or anti-American. It's just stating a fact. People around here seem to have a problem with facts that upset their belief system.

Speaking of Tyrants and Thugs you really need to find another angel

At a news conference after the summit, President Trump was asked if he believed his own intelligence agencies or the Russian president when it came to the allegations of meddling in the elections.

"President Putin says it's not Russia. I don't see any reason why it would be," he replied.

US intelligence agencies concluded in 2016 that Russia was behind an effort to tip the scale of the US election against Hillary Clinton, with a state-authorised campaign of cyber attacks and fake news stories planted on social media.

What has US reaction been?
In a strongly-worded statement, US House Speaker Paul Ryan said Mr Trump "must appreciate that Russia is not our ally".

"There is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russia, which remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals," he said, adding that there was "no question" Moscow had interfered in the 2016 election.
