Contracts for 515 aircraft leased to Russian airlines will be terminated

提交時間:

Lessors are set to terminate hundreds of aircraft leases with Russian airlines following Western sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine that require the contracts be cancelled. Asian lessor BOC Aviation said today that most of its aircraft in Russia would be affected by European Union sanctions that require the leases be terminated by March 28. (www.airguide.info) 更多...

It's one thing to terminate a lease on paper. It's a very different thing to reclaim custody of the aircraft, if parked at a Russian airfield.

The lessors are legally complying with the sanctions. Time will tell the ultimate disposition of the planes. And time will tell the financial write downs or write-offs that may arise.

Ireland is recalling hundreds of aircraft according to another story in this mornings batch o' news.
vector4traffic
Stolen aircraft can't file flightplans.

brucecameron1836
The Russian Government would allow flight plans som long as the equipment stays within Russian borders, I should think.
EB333

They aren't stolen if you can't return them

That's kind of like saying if the lights are on but I can't turn them off they aren't on...or if the hot water's on but I can't turn it off it isn't on? Stolen is stolen until returned.
charlie02vy
Exactly. Possession is 9/10ths of the law.
Russia can fly them until they airframe is worn out, then tell the lessor to come get what remains.

EU just banned sales of aircraft parts and supplies. Russian airlines use primarily Airbus's at the moment. So good luck getting it fixed if something breaks.

Well, if Russia holds back enough Airbuses from the lessors, they can cannibalize some as a source of spares. Dont forget that sanctions are leaky, they could get parts via friendly nations
jimjallen
Jim Allen 4
Agreed, that’s the problem. Plenty of “leaky” sources if the price is right. Actually, it doesn’t even matter. You think Putin cares if the average Russian can’t fly somewhere? Oligarchs still fly.
bruceahz
Exactly. And even if the Oligarchs can't fly Putin would still not care. He would rather burn the house down than give in.

...also agree, however, I believe in this situation loopholes might get smaller and smaller as sympathy wains for the Soviet block...

Iran flew 727's for years after not being able to buy spare parts from Boeing for their aging fleet. There's a black market for everything, even aircraft parts.

There is a TV show on Discovery called Airplane Repo. I have enjoyed many episodes. Maybe that gang would have a crack at some of these leased by Russia? :)

Folks on the show also repossessed some high-priced boats / yachts. Would they try to repossess the Oligarch's $ 500 million megayachts ? :)

I loved that program... But in all reality, it is not reality! It is about as Fake as Fake can get!

Fully entertaining but highly staged. Selling soap via captured eyeballs.

I think the truly realistic ones were the first episodes with Nick Popovich's company... the later stuff became mostly "reenactments".

Send Dog the Bounty Hunter to get them. That show is not fake! lol
bdabneyjr
You're right...highly entertaining. Much more realistic in the first couple of seasons before they began staging them in later seasons.

Terminating the lease is one thing... Getting the planes back is another!

I suspect that this is the first step in going after Russian assets in the West to recover the costs of the aircraft. If they can successfully grab $10 billion in assets, it's gonna hurt.

I had the same thought.

Great, and just how will they get these airplanes back out of Russia? Send a repo team? Nothing stopping them from using them anyway, or worse destroying them..

It’s establishing a paper trail. Once this all gets sorted out, recovery of assets or some other means of compensation probably will happen. Having 500+ planes flood the market doesn’t sound feasible.

And not to mention that airports will look like 9/11 again... No one will be able to fly in our out of any airport with all of them confiscated and parked somewhere!
AleksandarGovedarica
Iran has dodged sanctions for many years and still keeps them flying domestically. Russia will probably do the same.

Flight Aware links to this and other articles, which are political in nature. And then Flight Aware provides the space for commentary on these political articles. By their actions, Flight Aware does encourage political discussions when they are related to aviation.

More like Flight Aware tolerates the political discussions

Sure mary... keep your head in the sand until we are an authoritarian state as trump tried to do after a FREE & HONEST election and is STILL trying to do.

Those of us that DO care about democracy will not be silenced.

If Russia refuses to give them up.... How are they going to stop get them...
21voyageur
21voyageur 2
More importantly, IMHO is WHO will stop them from using them internally and where allowed. If the "free world" can't/won't stop them from cruely invading a country, think they care about someone coming in to repossess an Airbus 320?
overpar56
Steve Stein 1
If they’re not flying, then there’s the cost of storage that has to be factored in. Internally, how much capacity do they need? With the Ruble at an all-time low, who can afford a ticket?

I’m sure Russia has some dry climate to move the planes to. Not sure what they did during early Covid grounded fleets.
billbeyatte
Good luck ever leasing a plane again if the Russians don't comply.
flybd5juan
So now it's not that they can't fly to countries that banned them from their airspace, they can have their aircraft repossessed in just about any country in the world? Yowza. This is turning into a clusterf*** for Russia. Good.

Funny thing is Russia has hundreds of billions of dollars owed to it by Ukraine starting way before this conflict and economic manipulating to cause Russia to lose money. You could almost figure somebody is trying to float a bad economy. Even Hawaii in the US where it's said the US is self-sufficient in oil was buying cheaper low sulfur oil from Russia. Even funnier the cheaper Russian oil was being sold at over US market value with the Hawaii refinery now saying i the newspaper don't worry the price won't fluctuate much. Welcome to the international world of big finance and business. It's a game of take the other guy for as much as you can. Seems Russia got tired of it.

Wonder how it would play out with the 2 most recent megalomaniacs at the table. Obviously, political doctrines mean nothing to them whether they be Russian or American.

Trump is a clown and worse, a traitor. He did everything that Putin asked of him to destroy NATO. Have you forgotten (or just chosen to ignore) that the traitor's first impeachment revolved around him withholding sending congressional approved weapons (javelins) to Ukraine if Zelinsky didn't provide manufactured dirt on Biden? Trump's final traitorous act was the withdrawal of the US from the Open Skies Treaty after he lost the election. Once again, he did Putin's bidding.

Biden has done a tremendous job of repairing NATO and our relationship with the EU. He has put together historic economic sanctions that will leave the Russian economy in tatters. Trump, on the other hand, has called Putin smart and praised him for the invasion of Ukraine. Such a change from the Party of Reagan to the Party of Trump.

Trump was a clown with the IQ of a rattle since the day he was born.

You will never win a war against Russia. They are used the sanctions.
flybd5juan
Russia has never seen sanctions like this. Ever. And their oligarchs **used** to be immune to sanctions. Now even their debit cards don't work. Pain is an excellent motivator. Just wait.

By using the term "MAGA", you are encouraging political talk as it was generated and leveraged by the biggest and most selfish ()*() ever to exist in US politics. BUT, he is a symptom of a fractured and galvanized society. All of course IMHO. My one and only comment on this thread.

Elections have consequences in other nations as well.

Of course, second place in their election was the communist party at 30% to Putin's 53%. It's communism with corruption or just corruption.

All these sanctions are going to come back and bite the world in the ass. Russia is sitting on the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons out of any nation including America. Putin is going to start acting like a wounded animal. And wounded animals are highly unpredictable.
