There are just some days when you don't really want to go flying through that stuff. Dispatchers do their very best to keep you out of the bumps, but sometimes you can't predict where they are going to be the lightest. The meteorologists can't nail areas of turbulence down with perfect accuracy.

A long time ago, after experiencing severe turbulence, the fellow to my left told me "kid, most days the drinks are stirred. Today, they'll be shaken" .

Hey y'all I just love reading comments on this site...I am old, salute to all the brave and talented pilots and support people in the profession. Dad would be 92 on March 6th 2019 if he was still kickin. He served in the USMC and finally got his private license after learning on a seaplane way back. He was blind in one eye but it did not stop him from flying private. He got his Cessna and kept it at Orlando Executive Airport (Herndon) but only got to fly for a few years. I miss you Dad. Happy Birthday.

Looks like it happen right over the Sierra Nevada mountains. Every pilot out west knows about mountain waves, rotor clouds and all the hazards flying over the Sierras in any weather. Steve fossit died in the Sierras and plenty more pilots. I believe it’s a plane still atop mount Whitney the tallest mountain in the US

There was Sigmet for Turbulence all over the West and also a Convective Sigmet for No Cal and Nevada. This guy was in the middle of both. There were some smppther rides over the Pacific but ATC wasn't allowing all the northbound flights over there.

Be careful what you say a lot of participants are pilots. I am retired from flying Boeing 767-300 air cargo all over the world. I couldn't agree with your accurate assessment "(linbb)" any better than anyone else on the site

Taylor you're really hung up on these pireps. At the time there wasn't so many and ATC was reporting light chop. Take a seat you weren't there.

Must be nice to have all these resources available to you after the fact.. maybe spend more time actually flying and less time at your desk. These are professional pilots and dispatchers that their sole job is to provide safety. You can not tell me they just let them fly though it. Pilots at the time were just saying light-mod chop on freq. Trust me. I was there.

Unfortunately, weather is not as widely taught or understood as it once was! Sigmets, Prog charts, Sfc Analysis plus a myriad of others including paying attention to the shear on the flight plan printout dosen't get the attention from training organizations that it should. Including mountain flying because it’s a whole different ball game than in the mid-continent regions. just my two cents worth.

I know a lady who was a F/A on a Boeing 757. She was severely hurt with a spinal compression when their CANADA 3000 was coming out of Mexico City and was pasted on the ceiling before being slammed to the floor. She has never flown since because of chronic PTSD. Before you couldn't get her off the aircraft. She was assigned to a Boeing 757's because she speaks 4 languages.
She has had therapy but refuses to fly because of her spinal injury.
