Heathrow 13 to be sentenced

提交時間:

The 13 activists who cut through a perimeter fence and chained themselves to Heathrow’s northern runway are likely to become the first climate change protesters to be jailed in the UK when they are sentenced this morning, despite the support of prominent politicians. (www.theguardian.com) 更多...

With all all due respect to the deluded individual known as btweston, they destroyed property, trespassed in a very hazardous area, interfered with a business, disrupted air travel, inconvenienced hundreds if not thousands of innocent individuals, cost several companies lots of money, and all because they thought they were above the law and had a right to do as they pleased whether it was right or not. As hard headed as they are, I'm sure prison time will not change them at all. If you were on the receiving end of their protests, as stated by Cal Keegan, you might be singing a different tune. I doubt it though. You would probably jump off the plane and join them.

They endangered the lives of the people on the flights that had to divert. What right do they have to face airliners to divert? Mere jail time is too lenient. Perhaps they should do airliner waste tank servicing for a few months as a bonus.

At least they have to do community service. They will be benefiting the community for the first time in their lives.

When they decided to do a CRIMINAL endeavor even with the best of intentions what they did was still a CRIME. As was often repeated on the US TV crime show,"If you can't do the time, don't do the crime". Say I wonder if any of those sympathetic politicians looking for votes will volunteer to do the 3 to 7 years they will get ?

5-10 years, depending on who was the instigator

Good thing I wasn't able to vote. I'd have cast the last vote to leave them there chained to the fence. Give the birds something to doo doo on!.....C

It's a crime to break into an airport, no matter the reason. They should have been punished. You know that if they had been traditionally dressed Muslims peacefully protesting, they'd be in jail right now.

No it looks like you didn't. In the US, we have the right to freedom of protest as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others; I believe the UK has somewhat similar liberties. If you take the side of the Heathrow 13, you side with anarchy and supporting people running out onto runways causing chaos. We can't run an aviation system if we allow people to run onto runways without consequences.
Bobqat
There are consequences for running out onto a runway - besides some ramp rat getting an hour of overtime hosing down the landing gear...

There is NO SUCH THING as climate change.
The label "denier" is a buzz term used to impugn those who do not buy into the notion that the sky is falling. And to control the conversation.

Ugh, yeah, brilliant, great slur whipping out the "denialist" label. I hope you're trying to go somewhere the next time these coddled activists decide to disrupt travel.

Try your denialism attacks on someone who fell off the turnip truck a little more recently than I did, pal. Having studied and/or lived through the red scare, global cooling, the population bomb, the war on drugs, acid rain, mad cow disease, peak oil, the ozone hole, the "campus rape epidemic", "zero tolerance" suspending of kids from school for biting a pop tart into the "shape of a gun" or possessing Advil, forcing teenagers onto the sex offender registry for life for sending racy pics of themselves to each other and innumerable other memes produced by statists attempting to grow their power and the "useful idiots" (like you) that support them, it is trivial to contextualize global warming right where it belongs, the statists' latest power grab.

Despite the relentless bellowing to the high heavens about climate change by you and your ilk people consistently rate it as one of the least important problems, mostly likely due to their memories of hyped calamities that never happened, plus exhortation exhaustion. Once harping on climate no longer moves the meter you'll move on to some new chimeric calamity that only a bigger and more intrusive government can solve.

Speaking of denial, btweston, you provide a great example of that concept.

Even though my career is in aviation, I sympathize with these protesters and am personally glad that they didn't receive jail time. Non-violent protests have proven to be an important and effective display of civil unrest for centuries. The Boston Tea Party, and Selma March are examples of this which effected profound changes in our history. And although there is no arguing that what they did was illegal, their crimes were not meant to harm anyone, or for personal gain. Quite the contrary actually. They were fully aware of the potential consequences of there actions, but were willing to sacrifice their personal freedom to bring attention to (what they obviously consider) an injustice on society.

They didn't just protest, they destroyed property, interfered with air commerce, disrupted business, and caused much monetary loss and inconvenience. The reasons for their protests can be admired but their actions should be condemned. I neither sympathize or admire them.

I'm not a big admirer of many Eco-demonstrators...BUT, "destroyed property, interfered with air commerce,
disrupted business, and caused much monetary loss and inconvenience"....I'd say that as far as climate change
goes, you ain't seen nothing yet.... :P
