No, the real story was that Amelia and all those long-gone fliers did not have as reliable equipment as today's, navigation was done with quite crude and unreliable ADFs, perhaps sextants were on board but uselss if cloud coverage an issue. A totally different world.
Her tail number is trackable as well! added, and alerts set! Depending on their route, LiveATC may have them on a given feed as well.
