A difficult back country approach revisited, 2013-U of I's Taylor ranch

This year's Islander early morning flight into University of Idaho's Taylor ranch. Flying with McCall (Idaho) Aviation. Canyon walls next to the wing tips, sun reflecting off of Big creek, and a wet grass runway. Who needs coffee for this? I sure didn't. (www.youtube.com) 更多...

Oh yeah. Wadda do about getting a wind check? Call ahead? Cross or down wind landings must be an extra bonus.

Easy answer. The wind almost always blows down the canyon. It is usually calm in the morning, with a stiff tailwind for landings in the afternoon. Best to fly to Taylor in the mornings. The ranch emails weather information to McCall Aviation or Arnold Aviation in the mornings when flights are scheduled.

Climb out after a missed approach must be fun. I guess you just power up and go for the blue stuff. Brown stuff - bad!

Phil. You are a fucking idiot. My dad flies for a back country service and has Breen been flying the back country for decades. I have several hundred hours of back time and would certainly not fly into the back without getting current first.

I've never asked a pilot about whether a missed approach was possible at this strip. I think it would be OK empty, but dicey fully loaded. The stream makes a sharp "S" bend 1/5 mile from the end of the airstrip and the canyon narrows considerably. In any case, a couple of sharp banks through the "slot" would probably be in order.

I wouldn't want to be on that flight.

On google earth, search "taylor ranch landing area".

Following up. No sane pilot would dare take a plane in here without excellent visibility. And the pilots are backwoods pros. So...a go around would probably result from an animal unexpectedly walking out onto the runway. Meaning any go around would most likely be attempted from very short final after you've banked that last turn. Yowser!

I believe there is special training required to land here. And permission is required in advance from the University of Idaho and the caretakers.

I'm always thinking about that too, I try to drill it into my son's head when he flies. Tell him to observe the open spots in the day so he'll know where to go in the dark if that engine sputters. It's a pain in the ass with the what if's, but it has kept me ok for 27 years of flying...
