Forget The Pilot, Call A Plumber! - When A Plane Meets A Pothole

提交時間:

"On May 6 2011, the newly branded United Continental Boeing 737-800 Registration Tail Number N12221 rolled out of the paint shop at Greenville, Mississippi with her new livery, and pilots, ready for take-off. Instead, they should have called a plumber!" From the law offices of Countryman & McDaniel at LAX; cargolaw.com. You have to scroll down the page a bit but the story and photos are spine-tingling. Wonderful website, too. (www.cargolaw.com) 更多...

Wow! Incredible photos. What happened to the wingtip, though?

....my thoughts exactly....how would the tip of the winglet come off from this?

I wasn't sure, that was weird too.

Just an after thought, maybe it was damaged by rescue crews, seeing at that time how they did not know what was going on... Just speculation. Working on those winglets, they are not just going to snap off.

I had the same question. How did the winglet get broken?

Funny. They may act quickly to cover the name, essentially disassociating the aircraft from United, but look at the result.... This happened 8 months ago and the only source to expose it is a 1983 website.

I wonder how much United paid the mainstream media to hush up...

To the media this was no big deal. No bigger then a pothole swallowing a car in any neighborhood. Interesting to local media, maybe? To plane guys like us yes. To tothe national media, not worth the time or the ink for there was no sensationalism to this. Just a multi million dollar plane damaged

I'll bet if it was a regular flight, it would be all over the news....

"the only source to expose it is a 1983 website" ???
This is old news. I read about it from a few sources back at the time, one being FlyerTalk.

This was a sink hole, not a pot hole. Neither UA nor CO are at fault, in fact the aircraft was probably in control of the paint vendor, not the airline. Covering the name & logo is a smart move. Otherwise, some idiot will post photos trying to claim that the airline had a crash.

People on FlightAware are knowledgeable about livery, but 99% of the public would have no clue as to who owned the plane so the first thing to do after a whoops is to cover the identity. I swear from accident pictures that the first people at the scene of an airliner crash are people with paint spray cans to cover the identity even before the flames are extinguished. Seems ridiculous but apparently company's PR departments have found it is the thing to do.

They need to get survey done of that apron. It has no rebar..nothing. This will happen again unless they fix the main problem. This was normal sinkage. Nothing unusual at all.

I'm not clear how the winglet was damaged. The gear, the engine and Ohhh the new pant job, what a mess. The perils of rigid pavement

I saw this at glh. I thought wwii airfields were bullet proof.

No steel reinforcement in the slab...sink hole the cause...no. Cheapskate slab laying is the cause.

How hard would it be to drag a length of chain across the planned path of taxi. You only have to do it once in a while with equipment you have hanging around. Trucking managers have been protecting their equipment against strange events for years. Their assets are precious and not as vulnerable as aircraft. The walk around or PTI for a tractor/trailer is much less extensive than for a B738.

For want of a pipe, an airplane was lost...

What is the link? I find a whole series of events, none of which shows me anything except the ad for the law firm. Someone, anyone, post the lick to the story and photos. Maybe I'm dumb but I am having trouble finding it.

I got caught by the same thing. Just scroll way down the page, below all the links. The pictures are there.

That website is terrible with regards to design. But it is loaded with fantastic information (mainly marine accidents/incidents).

Question- Did the sinkhole cave in when they ran over it or was it there already and they just ran into it? If it is the latter then perhaps these people need to quit (probably fired already) and apply with TSA.

Based on the photo under the wing, the concrete break was fresh and most likely occurred when the landing gear rolled over the unsupport slab. The rolling momentum of the plane then collapsed the gear when it dropped into the sinkhole. I agree with Roland that this airport needs to conduct a full structural survey of their ramp pavement to determine if there are other voids under the slabs. You can do it with a heavy chain or steel rod. The sound pitch changes when the chain is dragged across the slab over the void or the steel rod is dropped on the pavement over a void.

I believe those are paint prep markings, not some attempt to cover the logo. The winglet damage is scary, did the stress of the fall cause it to snap?

My view is that the lawyers seen an good oppertunity to advertise themselves. They knew damnwell everybody will want to see what they are talking about.

I saw this when it first happened. The funny thing is they tried to cover the livery and we all know who's it was to start with.

As soon as an airline's airplane is involved in an accident, first thing is cover up your name on the plane. Most people don't follow the livery of the airplane.

I am an amateur at web design but I think I could do a better job than this. This is more of a law firm ad but good photos when found.
