Too bad as I flew SFO FRA and MUC many times on both the 380 and 340. I preferred the 340-600 with a seat layout that was pretty comfortable. Nice premium economy cabin but even in regular economy only 2 seats on the sides. I will be sorry to see them go but I am guessing that business flying with not return for at least a year and never return to pre Covid levels since many meetings can be done remotely. I would hope that airlines see this as a problem and opportunity to reconfigure their cabins to reduce the needed business class seats and enlarge a premium economy cabin that many leisure travelers will pay up for.

I’ve read that the 747-8 will be the only four-engine type that Lufthansa will continue to fly.

So did Boeing win the long race of quad jets. I mean Airbus came with the A380 to kill the 747 but seems the Boeing 747 is still living on. Maybe not as strong but no one is putting there 747-8’s in long term storage like everyone but Emirates is for the A380.

If anything, 747’s will continue to live on as freighters, low hours passenger 747’s can be repurposed as Freighters. Some specialty airlines like Atlas Air still have 747’s as passenger aircraft w/the military & sports charters in mind needing to move large #’s of people @ one time.

I believe Emirates is planning on returning most of their A380s to service. If that happens, they’ll have more A380s in the air than there are 747-8s.

No because the Boeing 747-8 and a lot of cargo 747-400 are still flying.

Not a big market out there for either of these aircraft for resale. Their long term storage is their only choice initially in hopes of a market opening up and/or fuel prices to drop dramatically. If multiple vaccines come on line the winter migration to the sun might well bring some of them back as using them will be cheaper than buying new.

Jet A has already dropped. Refiners are selling it to marine bunkers to mix.

747-400s follow the same retirement schedule pre-conora (2025) and 748s remain until further notice.

Airbus should not have built the 380 and 340s (-300 and -600), Boeing took them to the cleaners with the 777 family as twin engines are far more fuel efficient.
