U-2 Spy Plane Takes on a New Surveillance Mission

提交時間:

The U.S. Air Force is investing more than $50 million to keep one of its oldest types of airplanes flying indefinitely. Despite its age, the U-2 remains an immensely capable reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft. Its combination of high-altitude flight capability and range still exceed those of most modern tactical and command-and-control aircraft, making it a more effective intelligence gatherer and data “node”—a high-capacity channel for passing along the information its sensors collect. I've always loved the U-2. It would be interesting to know if the U-2 was ever digitally reconstructed, like the SR-71 was, and see how close the slide rule wielding engineers of the 50's got he design right.

Big plus here is re-purposing the aircraft's payload system to keep it more agile and up-to-date.

Thank you for your insidt Mr. Muncy!

the dragon lady remains a useful platform, and was designed for the ages to continue to be able to complete the current and the next mission. Upgrading electronic suites has been planned for decades, so expect useful results from the next iteration of the noble U-2

Any idea where it will be based given the interesting sighting over the UK?

U2’s are based in the UK at Fairford.

If you look at fighter control.co.uk they generally have information about movement’s.

Coincidence - just watching a U2 at 58,000 ft over UK. Must be a great view out from that height.
