Historians Urge Connecticut to Reconsider First in Flight Claim

提交時間:

Connecticut lawmakers hoping to adopt the coveted "First in Flight" slogan for their state have been urged to stick with the generally acknowledged claim that the Ohio-born Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were the first to pull off powered flight in a heavier-than-air craft, in December 1903 in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. While he was alive, my father always said "Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see." There are pictures and video of the Wright Brothers flying. They are proven real. Case closed! There are many stories of others flying from ancient times up to the Wright Brothers but, Connecticut and others, save your breath without proof.

If I remember correctly, there was also a French gentleman that clamed the same thing. Wright Brothers all the way.

No different than those who stand to benefit from we were here first people in the US. I agree there is proof via pictures and film of them. Others just have word of mouth much like again who was here first. That claim lies in the bones discovered and could be why they are so reluctant at times to have them carbon dated.

It's bad enough having the "Birthplace of Aviation" vs. "First in Flight" arguments between Ohio and North Carolina (which is what those states settled on). Connecticut can go pound sand unless they can generate some actual proof.

They're both wrong. Mount Baldy is now closed to hang gliding, but for many years in the early part of the 1900's it was home to Octave Chanute who conducted over 100 "flights" over the Indiana dunes. The Wrights' visited him several times & there's no way they'd have flown without this guy!

All true. He just didn't add power to it and controlled with weight shift.

I do think we should keep an open mind and instead investigate and question this claim. Just because it has been written in history books for 100+ years doesn't make it acceptable if it is wrong. Heck for 100's of years it was taught that the Earth was the center of the universe and everything revolved around it. This has of course been disproven because of our desire to know the truth. Just because there are no pictures doesn't mean it didn't happen, but it does mean it will be difficult to prove or disprove the claim. Just a thought.
