Around the world with only one stop. It's a pretty cool thought. Just think how far we have come in the last 100 years!

Imagine combining this trip with an around-the-world cruise first. 100+ days on a ship then 1.5days in an aircraft. I think I will put that on my bucket list.

Singapore is killing the flights because they traded in the A340-500 fleet for A380's and A350's. They are happy to be rid of them. Just like the 747SP the -500 was shrunk from the -600 to carry the same fuel but have a longer range. The -500 then became too small to carry a two class cabin with business and premium economy, so it became all business. The LAX flights rarely sells out because the flight time is less than 3 hours difference using SQ with a stop on the way. You save about $2,000 with a stop. The 747SP was killed because improved engines meant you could use a full size 74 to fly JFK to NRT. The 777-300ER killed the A340-500 because it could cover almost the same ground, and had two fewer engines.

The flight itself is rather nice. The seat is quite large and the service beyond what anyone deserves. The interior furnishings are typical Airbus, which I describe as "a European no frills presentation." I find the upstairs on a 747 to be quieter and more comfortable than the A340-500.

I think the all Buss class flights are being removed from Newark...

How about doing it faster instead of just further? Maybe the mini seats and bathrooms would be more tolerable for a shorter time?

obviously you've never flown on SQ business class if you're complaining about "mini seats"

Talk about jet-lagged.

100 seats? If all pay full freight, revenue looks to be about $350,000. How much for fuel, salaries, maintenance, and opportunity costs? Does anyone know if this pencils out? If not, then that would explain the projected drop of the route. Expensive if set up for bragging rights, or publicity.

If it didn't "pencil out"...they wouldn't be doing it Joe.

Sharpen your pencil Joel. Seats are not the only revenue stream. From California the plane was often the "Salad Express" carrying berries, fruit, lettuce, and other fresh farm items. The belly can easily add another 150K to a flight.

I read somewhere recently that the fastest way to become a millionaire is to be a billionaire and buy an airline.

I think it was Richard Branson that said that one.
