If you can smell fuel in flight, you have a MUCH larger problem.

Hell what about as a passenger I’ve noticed that numerous times, just not American Airlines, but United, Spirit and Delta as well

I've never smelled fuel or exhaust in the cabin during flight. On the ground, yes, rarely. It doesn't bother me as a pax but I wouldn't be happy about long term exposure as crew.
