Video: Small plane crashes after clipping power line

提交時間:

Authorities say a small plane clipped a power line and crashed into a corn field while attempting to land in southeastern Michigan, injuring the two men on board. Sunday night's crash happened in Monroe County Ida Township, about 40 miles southwest of Detroit. The co-pilot recorded video of the attempted landing that was released by the sheriff's department. Click the video player to watch the crash. WARNING: Graphic language. (www.myfoxdetroit.com) 更多...

Wow two recorded plane crashes in a week....I pray they have a speedy recovery....Did anyone notice any power line markers (the big red balls)?...I saw that the top of the pole was red but you can't see that until you are right up on it.

ridiculous place for a power line if you ask me......

I imagine the power pole was probably there first and if it wasn't they really should have put some markers on it....I've noticed that 58J has pretty much the same set up but they do have wire markers...Even if they were familiar with the field it was probably just a bad day that turned worst.

Another reminder to always: approach an unfamiliar airport with extra caution; review the available airport information map[s] before entering the area; and use a higher than normal approach path to unfamiliar, uncontrolled landing areas. Truth is a large number of local airports have wires close to at least one end, if not both.

Maybe the end of the runway is a bit too close to the power line as well

Reminds me of a conversation I had with (a very famous pilot) we were talking about crop dusting. "I prefer power lines, you hit them and they arc and blow apart, the damn telephone lines just seem to stretch and stretch and stretch...."

This brings back memories of an incident I witnessed about 45 years ago near Wee Waa in Australia, when a Piper Pawnee crop-sprayer hit an overhead line. The line (I thought it was a power line?) was caught on the tail-wheel and stretched out for a few hundred yards as the plane decelerated rapidly, and the pilot cut the power when he realized he'd effectively stopped flying, at a height of about 1 yard or so. At that moment, the wire broke, and the plane plopped into the crop. Not a scratch on it. The problem was that the cotton crop had just been irrigated, and the plane was about 200 yards from any solid ground, and the soil was a very sticky black loam: even walking out the pilot had difficulty. It was nearly 2 weeks before they got the plane back.

classic pilot error...glad they walked away

without the big red marking balls I doubt anyone would have seen it....I hope they make a speedy recovery

What an insightful analysis.

Not only are the wires too close to the runway, but they have a pole right at the end of the runway. That is an obstruction that should have long since been removed.

Warning, graphic language! You're kidding, right? If this crash was anywhere in Australia, the language would've really been graphic!

At 00:05, why would someone put a runway right in front of a powerline. I hate to say it, but it was an accident waiting to happen with that powerline that close to the end of the runway.

So this is why my instructor had me practice those short-field over a 50foot obstacle approaches so much.

More info here - they were flying a Kitfox, apparently the pilot is the owner of the private strip where they were attempting to land, seems like it really ought to have a displaced threshold with that power line there, in the video clip on that webpage they're theorizing that the pilot wasn't used to flying with a passenger, which is why his glideslope was too low, but I don't think that would have made a difference, if he was familiar with the airfield he would have known about the power line, it was just an error of judgement.

I saw this on the news last night. Very scary I am glad they both survived. This site is just a few miles from the crash site of Comair 3272 in 1997 in which 29 people died.

If not familiar with the (private) strip, a low ajacent pass should have been made in both directions to see and look for any hazards. Pot holes, wash out surfaces, farm animals and wind direction.

I believe that was Grandpas strip so that's out, he was familiar with airport. Anxiety of having to land and stop on such a short distance makes some pilots test the wire act.

what in Sam Hill is a power line doing that close to the end of an airstrip?

Power lines are/were approach side of Saum Rd.
With current weather conditions, I hope they didn't take out much corn.

In Wee Waa there are lots of Crop Dusters near my place.

There are many small airports that were setup post powerline install. Then you factor in how short the fields are...

I didn't see the big red balls on the line like they normally have, I was looking for those also.

That's why we practice short field approaches and forward slips to a landing. Not sure if I could get it back out, but I could land my Cherokee Six there with no problem.

Gotta be able to get it back out! that's just the half of it! i know you know this tho. just blabbin!
