For me it is not a question of whether I get mucked about by security at US airports or not flying, it is a choice whether I will go to the USA or not. I decided to keep away from the US as being the easiest of all solutions.
How entirely stupid of some to suggest that if you don't like being patted down in public you always have the alternative of not flying. Unbelieveble insensivity, - the person who suggested it must be a TSA agent or a twin brother of Mr Rumsfeld.

The terrorists are looking for any inconsistencies in human bodies and behavior. The TSA is doing their very important jobs for our safety and well beings. I give them credit for all they accomplish at their paygrade. If you don't want to be checked for dangerous chemicals, drive or take a train.

To Richard: We aren't living in the 30's or 40's anymore. Bombs and weapons can be planted on people in very small sizes.We aren't giving up are rights, just trying to be safe. The terrorists are constantly testing our safety systems looking for gaps and holes like shoes, babies, women's hair and personal areas. I feel much safer when I and millions of others know that certain measures have been taken for our safety safety safety. Don't you think our armed forces give up some of their rights to secure our country all over the world. We should all have our rights with some compromises. Terrorists can kill thousands of people with just one plane(deadly missile). The TSA is our only line of defense.

Why do you think that every officer in the military has read a book written around 400 BC by a chinese general named Sung Tsu? Because we can learn from our past. We will be taken down a road of regret, if we fail to learn from the mistakes of the past. Obviously, History is not taught at the TSA. If it was, the agents with a conscionous with resign.

Richard, I actually agree with you on the weaknesses of the TSA. They only see in black and white. Individually,none of them want to be the guy or gal who let's a terrorist embark on a plane. Can you think of an alternative to the TSA???

Have you noticed that the FAA regulates aviation, NRC regulates nuclear power plants, FDA regulates drugs and food safety...on and on and on. Why do we need a big government jobs program to do a job that doesn't require government employees? The guidelines that serve the TSA can easily serve a non government company. So, Charles, what would be wrong with private security firms, following TSA guidelines, doing the job???

How many more have died in car accidents because they choose to make long drives, rather than face the humiliation of being groped in front of their kids by a pervert with a badge? I agree it is an imperfect system. However untill we allow the TSA to reasearch everyone entering the airport and allow them to profile and pass judgement before they enter the screening area then they are forced to treat everyone as a terrorist. You cannot have your cake and eat it too.

As long as we have the current management and staff, the TSA will remain an imperfect system. This is a classic example of kingdom building at the federal level. They don't feel the need to answer to any higher authority. They continually stomp all over the Bill of Rights. We both know there are systems that are far less intrusive that could be used, but it would mean the job could be done with fewer people and, the keyword here, less money. OUR money. We are actually charged to be violated!! So, take your cake cliche' someplace else. In this case, if the government would get out of the way we could have both.

A court of law decides whether or not a crime has occured. Your quote "you would not be vigorously defending their crimes." I am not defending them. I am simply stating the facts. As with most things that humans do over time through trial and error we usually make it better and or safer. Cars were made without seatbelts, motorcycles were manufactured before helmets.
I understand your frustration, be thankful that we live in a country where you are allowed to even discuss imperfections in government. I have always been a proponent of less government. You claim they have commited crimes? What crimes have they been found guilty of?

I have witnessed female agents, with questionable sexual preference, pick young, well endowed female passengers for random pat down screening. This agent would place her opened palmed hand on the breast of the shocked passenger. It so happpen that particular day, I had a female FO that fit her personal preference profile. When she began the same groping technique on my FO, I forcefully called a halt to it. A female police officer, with the same questionable orientation as the agent told me to step back and allow the assault to continue. I refused. I demanded that the video tapes of the area be reviewed to prove my point. They had the unmitigated gall to tell me the security area is not surveiled by camera. When I explained I would testify in a court of law that the agent was assaulting passengers, the agent and cop slowly de-escalated. Try to fight the TSA on stuff like this. Janet Napolitano, who also swings from the other side of the plate would laugh at it. So, yeah, Douglas there are crimes being commited, they will never be prosecuted. Kinda, like the brown shirts back in Germany around the 1935 time frame.

This, so called, screening program has not, NOT, stopped one bad guy from getting on a flight. Passengers and crew have stopped a lot of bad guys AFTER they've passed through our iron clad security system. Please, anyone out there, produce one example of a bad guy, with harmful intent, being stopped and detained at a security check point. The burger flippers are too busy groping cancer survivors to actually concern themselves with islamic terrorist.

That is not a valid indicator, Richard. You would also have to ask how may would be terrorists have chosen not to try and board a plane because of the security screening. And, how many would be terrorists have tested the system with something that looks like an explosive but is really something benign, like a breast implant, with an intent to later fly with explosives if they are able to by-pass the security system.

If you look at the card picture posted, it says the implants DO contain metal. I'm guessing that's what the problem was. The card image posted looks useless though. No identifying information on it. It looks like anyone could get one of those. But that would make sense for a temporary device like it sounds like this was.

My father has a hip replacement and a pacemaker. He has cards that look much more official with his name on them and the device information. I think there's even an xray of his hip on that card. He hands them to the TSA when they check his ID. They usually then ask him if he would like to be screened in private. Never had a problem.

It's a shame when screwed up things like this happen. This could have easily been avoided. The TSA could have been more polite with this and the passenger should have told them in advance she had a metal device in her that may cause an issue. Hopefully everyone learned something.

So much for common sense. You'd think they would have had at least a little training on doing their job in a compassionate manner. They can carry your belongings back and forth when they decide to screen them more thoroughly but they couldn't retrieve the ladys' wallet so she could prove what she asserted? Heck, she submitted to the backscatter scan! Could they not interpret it correctly??? What a disgusting performance by TSA.

Mr. Grady, simply put, TSA needs to Profile passengers passing through check points. But, thanks to organizations like the ACLU, that practice is not allowed. Why? Because it would allow LEO's to use their intuition when determining who needs additional scrutiny. Let's see.... we have a WWII vet in a wheel chair, and we have a twenty-two year male traveling with a Jordanian passport. Who is a more likely threat? In the new group/groop think of liberalized court system, they are equally threatening. How STUPID is that? So, we spend valuable time groping and humiliating a cancer patient, with proof of her condition, while we fail to profile the obvious threats. On a battlefield, that logic gets people killed.

Profiling works until the criminals get wise to whats being profiled and change their MO. Then profiling is completely useless.

I didnt say I was OK with what the TSA did or does not do. I take issue with profiling b/c I've had ample experience with it from working with USCBP agents and found time after time that it does not work. Especially when left in the hands of idiots.

TSA's philospophy is that EVERYONE is a potential suspect, and they act accordingly. AKA shotgun effect. Thus, they avoid having to hire and train people with brains and common sense (i.e. non-burger flippers). Now, just to be clear, not all TSA officers are like the bozo at JFK. I've met and spoken to some who are conscientious, thorough, and very polite about what they have to do as part of their job. It certainly would be nice if all of them were like that.

Hey they are TSA people they are qualified for welfare and need all the understanding you can give them they may have completed the second grade they may know how to read,this way to the welfare line. That is one agency that needs to go away.

I have a pain implant in my lower left back. Every time I fly I have the card in my hand and not once has the TSA looked at it. I have held it infront of their face and they could care less. So while I am be patted down all my belongings are sitting on the end of the scanner table for anyone to take. Luckily I usually fly with a member of my family who knows to go and get my computer and other things because I will be led aside and not have access to them. I don't mind them looking at the implant at all, but why do they think they have to pat down the other 99% when I am pointing the device out to them just like the scanner did. I believe in security, but security starts with common sense, that's where the problem lies. The TSA dosen't teach common sense, or common deciency!

I think that was totally unnessary to subject this couragious lady to such treatment. Best of luck to her and the family because I lost two family members from cancer and hope they can come up with a cure soon. This lady has gone through hell and really don't need that kind of treatment, especially when they already knew what was going on or should have known. I think this officer and I use the word officer loosely should be brought up on charges if not fired for their actions. That was totally out of bounds.
