The intakes just in front of the numbers: Any idea of their function?

Hi John. This not MiG 21 , but Su-22M4 - export version of Su-17M4.

Bit late to the party... those intakes are to feed more air to the engine on the ground when there simply isn't enough getting rammed into the nose intake.
