Why did they bomb the runways? Wouldn't they be useful for the British?

Runways are easy to repair, with the right equipment. Port Stanley was quite close so the Poms would have been well prepared to quickly rebuild the runways.

Sorry to correct you Peter, the reason the Runway was bombed was two fold, it prevented the Argentinian fast jets from using it... and Buenos Aries was 400 miles CLOSER to Ascension than Port Stanley, if our lads could fly 4000 miles across featureless ocean and only be ONE MILE off target, think what they MIGHT have been able to do if they didn't have to fly so far... and not all over water...You need to read the book called Vulcan XM 607, you will then FULLY understand... you don't just "Patch" runways up... its not that easy. I talk OFTEN with a guy who flew the " BLACK BUCK " missions to Stanley, and see the Vulcan that did the " BUSINESS " whenever I want to .. its back at RAF Waddington as a "Gate Guard" ... Regards Allan
