A GREAT bomber overshadowed by the name Flying Fortress.

This aircraft is almost surely a PB4Y-1, the Navy patrol bomber version, with an Aerco nose turret and the maritime paint scheme. This was the equivalent of the B24J, more-or-less.

She had more range than the B-17, could carry a higher bomb load farther, but she required more "hands on" handling than the B-17.

John:

The 'Flying Boxcar' was the Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar, not he Consolidated B-24 Liberator

Wikipedia
The B-24's spacious, slab-sided fuselage (which earned the aircraft the nickname "Flying Boxcar") was built around a central bomb bay
William Pearson
My father was a B-24 pilot in the 451st Bomb Group of the 15th Air Force in WWII. He called the 24 "The Flying Boxcar"

When I went home in 72 the C130 was called 'The Box Car'
It took us to the big air base.
Where we lost our gun & ammo.
And got on a Real airliner for Home!
