London-Gatwick IT Meltdown: Whiteboards Used For Flight Display Information

A massive IT outage from provider Vodafone shut down all flight information display boards in London-Gatwick Airport’s (LGW) North and South terminals. Staff at LGW had to think quickly and revert to quite an old method—the Whiteboard. Gatwick Airport said, “We are sorry, but due to an IT issue our flight information is not displaying correctly. Back when I was in the USAF, we would call something like that, Operation Stubby Pencil. Back then we still pretty much did everything using forms and going manual. The computers were slow back then and no real time information.

Good practice for the Ground Staff. Must have made passengers talk to each other or moan. Can understand that. Let’s hope it does not happen again.

Cant quite understand how someone couldn't find a projector that they could beam onto a wall - as big as you like - which would surely be easier to update than writing...

Yes, an overhead projector with acetate film and an erasable black marker!!! They worked back in the 70's. Wonder where you would find one now.
