Usually we use a lot of automation = autopilot. It is important though to maintain proficiency in "hand flying".

Guido: I'm wondering if you have access to a small private plane like my 172 with only IFR steam gauges with no GPS and no autopilot. Instrument flying that way is more work but I like the hands-on feeling of really flying rather than just punching buttons.

Guido: I like the way, during landing, you were ready to kill the autopilot and hands-fly it in - if needed. Too bad the 777 pilot at SFO wasn't thinking that way when they dropped below landing airspeed.
