A bird crashed through the windshield of a Cape Air plane during a flight from Hyannis to Nantucket on Wednesday, leaving the two pilots and four passengers spattered with blood but without a serious injury.

The twin-engined Cessna 402C had just taken off from Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis when the bird strike occurred. One of the pilots suffered minor scratches from the broken glass but the crew was able to safely return to Hyannis.

Photos of the plane showed an obliterated first officer’s windshield, a decapitated bird’s head on the floor of the aircraft and blood splatters on the interior walls.

A local ornithologist told the Cape Cod Times he believed the bird was a red-throated loon, which resembles a duck and can weigh as much as 6 lbs.
