Lockheed C-130 Hercules (92-0549) - It isnt that the various vortices dont occur here at Reno, it is just that they dont occur very often, so naturally we were pretty pleased when we saw the prop vortices that became so nicely visible as this (Nevada Air Guard) High Rollers Hercules (92-0549) came down runway 16R and then rotated right across from us.

Obviously the weather was gray and wet, but I think the dark weather turned out to be an advantage. Because of the gray background, I believe the vortices swirls actually show up better than they would have if the background had been bright.
This particular day turned out to be a superb day for getting vortices in the photos. A short time after this Herc departed, I caught my first-ever snap of visible vortices coming from the engine of a B777 and streaming up and over a wing. At first glance, it looked a bit like some type of fluid leak, but then we realized what it really was.

Super "5" stars, Gary... indeed a great photo capture!

Great shot Gary! Have you ever seen those vortices that form when a low slung engine sucks up moisture off the ground and forms a perfect little moisture tornado which bends up over the engine cowling and into the engine? So cool!

Spectacular!

Very cool!

Mark -- The "up and over the wing" v-stream was the first time I'd ever caught such a shot and I truly doubt I'll ever catch it again. I've never seen the type you describe and I'd put $$ on the fact that I'll probably never see one of those here. We just don't get very much precip here; the odds are greater than one-in-a-billion that I'd be in the right place at just the right time. (Grin - but, it gives me a reason to be out spotting when it DOES rain, and I'll use any excuse to go spotting, so .. [chuckle] .. perhaps I'll be able to beat the odds, eh? BIG grin and a wave)

Just another of those great Airforce workhorses.

Thanks for the explanation. I was wondering how you captured the prop rotation without blurring the plane. I have never seen prop vortices. Great pic!

Wonderful Action Shot Gary...............

Prop Vortices do not get better than this !

Thank you for your comments on my photographs, I really appreciate them. It's always fun to get out and see the variety of aircraft that pass through Iqaluit - luck and patience help.

You have a wonderful photo collection, also. :)

years ago in A&P school and instructor taught that a prop screws or pulls the aircraft thru the air - this is proof
